Unshackled Ventures is a pre-seed venture fund for immigrant-founded startups. The fund is investing out of Fund III and is hiring an Operations Specialist/Manager. Beyond investment capital, Unshackled provides full immigration support, including visa sponsorship and employment. Unshackled has invested in over 80 companies and sponsored over 200 immigration filings.

The Operations Specialist/Manager will be responsible for all aspects of operations, including finance, people, and community. This relationship-driven role will help smooth the running of the operations of Unshackled Ventures and its related entities. This role requires the ability to understand context from transactions, apply organizational understanding to manage transactions and partners, review financial statements, identify gaps, and suggest ways to fill them. The Operations Specialist/Manager will work with the leadership team that includes General Partners, CFO, and our Head of Community.

Responsibilities

Finance operations

  • Monitor cash position for funds, coordinate with CFO and Fund Administrator to prepare capital calls
  • Monitor cash position for R&D projects and coordinate R&D advances from respective parties
  • Review invoices, determine appropriate allocation, and coordinate payment of invoices when due
  • Own and run the quarterly reporting process with portfolio companies, ie., collecting quarterly reports and incorporating them into fund performance
  • Update SOI for all funds using the latest quarterly data from portfolio companies and provide that info to fund admin for quarterly accounting
  • Manage monthly and quarterly book closing, review financials to identify anomalies and get them rectified
  • Review and update general, business, D&O/E&O/EPLI insurance to ensure compliance
  • Support fund admin and CFO in completion of annual audit and tax filings
  • Maintain a tax calendar and ensure tax filings in all jurisdictions are on schedule and tax payments are made timely

People operations

  • Onboard new hires, offboard terminated employees
  • Manage ongoing payroll and benefits including annual renewals and open enrollment
  • Manage immigration process by working closely with the immigration legal team ensuring that all immigration cases are on schedule, documents are maintained as required, and compliance requirements are met as instructed by the legal team

General

  • Manage workflows with vendors/service providers including fund admin, auditors, tax advisors, insurance broker, and HR & payroll provider (PEO). This includes providing context to these partners to enable them to perform their work.
  • Support the Head of Community with operations related to managing and growing the community such as events, community management, vendor management, etc.
  • Other special projects as may be needed to support investment team, community, or portfolio companies

Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of experience working in strategic finance, accounting, audit, consulting, or business operations roles
  • Foundational understanding of finance, accounting, and business workflows
  • Working knowledge of venture capital industry terminology and concepts
  • Clear and effective communicator, both oral and written
  • Aptitude and curiosity to take on new responsibilities
  • Ability to adapt quickly, exhibit grace under pressure and thrive in dynamic environments
  • Comfortable completing complex tasks and projects with minimal guidance and reacting to situations that require a quick turnaround with appropriate urgency
  • Motivated to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment and want to work in a fund where you can really make a difference
  • Integrity, judgment, discretion, credibility, professionalism, and a good sense of humor
  • Ideally full-time, open to part-time with an appropriate level of consistency for the right person
